There are few small disasters as irritating as losing your keys in Los Angeles. It never happens at a convenient time. It happens when your groceries are thawing in the trunk, when the meter is about to expire, when your dog is waiting inside, when you are late for a dinner reservation in Koreatown, or when you have just landed at LAX and realized your house keys are not in the pocket where they always live. Most people do the same little ritual first. They pat every poc

Getting locked out in Los Angeles has a special way of turning a normal day into a small crisis. It rarely happens when life is calm. It happens when the meter is running in Koreatown, when your dog is waiting inside an apartment in Silver Lake, when you are holding groceries in a Culver City parking garage, or when you are standing outside your front door in the Valley after a long shift. I have seen how fast a lockout can go from annoying to stressful. The good news is

A key breaking off in a lock has a special way of ruining a normal day. One minute you are carrying groceries up the steps in Silver Lake, trying to beat the heat before the ice cream melts. The next, half your key is in your hand and the other half is buried inside the front door lock. Jammed locks are not much better. You turn the key, feel resistance, try a little more pressure, then wonder whether one more twist will open the door or snap the key. These are the calls

Getting locked out in Los Angeles has its own particular flavor of stress. It might happen in a Koreatown apartment hallway with groceries warming in the bag, outside a Highland Park bungalow while the dog stares through the window, or in a parking structure near LAX with a flight time creeping closer. The city is big, traffic is unpredictable, buildings vary wildly by age and security setup, and a simple lock problem can turn into a small logistical mess fast. A good lo

Maybe your keys are sitting on the driver’s seat in a Koreatown garage while the meter is running. Maybe your front door lock finally gave up after years of coastal air in Venice. Maybe a tenant moved out of a Silver Lake duplex and you need the locks changed before the next person picks up the key

Getting locked out in Los Angeles has a special way of testing your patience. It rarely happens when you have time to spare. It happens when the meter is running, when your dog is inside barking at the door, when you are holding groceries in a Silver Lake driveway, or when you are standing outside your office in Koreatown after everyone else has gone home. That is when people usually pull out their phone and search for a “locksmith close to me.” The phrase sounds simple,

A customer once called me from a duplex near Los Feliz because her front door key felt “wrong.” That was the word she used. Not stuck, not broken, just wrong. She had recently moved in, and the key turned if she lifted it slightly, pushed in hard, and jiggled it at the same time. Her landlord told her it was normal for an older lock. It was not. When I arrived, the lock told the real story. The cylinder was worn, the key was a sloppy duplicate of a duplicate, and the lat
